Hello there Mr. Cosmic Nuggets, please tell us a bit about yourself
Hello! Nice to meet you! I'm a cosmic entity whom takes the form of many human and vegetable shapes, we come in peace to your world to spread the love and happy calm times with our arts.
OK, so how did you come up with the rad name Cosmic Nuggets?
This was our human name, we used our cosmic google and discovered the wondrous golden nuggets found deep beneath your earths crust. It was too much to resist including them in our title, who doesn't love a nugget!??
How do you get your inspiration for your characters and other illustrations?
The inspiration behind the characters comes from movies, science fiction cartoons, nature, ancient civilisations and so many other things its hard to list them all. Something about those lines and simplicity is a huge turn on for us.
You also do video animation of your characters, how do you start on a new animation? What are the steps?
The animation stuff is usually pretty basic too, so its not very technical heh, like the drawing pieces they usually start with a crude or funny idea which I then try to create somehow. The animation stuff I've worked on is some of the most basic I've seen, even just using photoshop. I need to level that up one day! Like my drawn art the simpler the technique the better. I like it short and sweet.
Your Characters are very detailed, how long would you say you spend on each one?
Hmm, depends on the size.. usually the drawn pieces are no bigger than A4 so I can bash them out kinda quick. Usually I'm just using line art styles too, so I will draw a piece out then ink it after. Like I mentioned with the animation stuff I get really bored if something takes too long. So I keep it quick n durty.
What kind of music do you enjoy, not only when working?
Ahh! Music is a huge part of my creative process, so I'm listening to a lot as I work. I'm down for a lot of different genres but when I'm in the zone its either Nicolas jar mixes or Lofi stuff, right now I'm listening and working to Of Montreal.
What would be your ultimate goal be as an illustrator?
To finally be able to make some cold hard cash, plus being respected for my work at the same time... Dream on I know :D
If you get stuck for ideas what do you do?
Playing guitar, biking, train journeys are good or sitting with a coffee in the nature listening to the animals shuffling around. Most of my best ideas come from when I'm being active, the moving juices in my brain just switch things on to a different frequency.
What advice would you give to people who want to start illustrating?
I would say the most important thing is to just have patience and find your own way. I always set out 10 years to find my way, I never expected to make anything good until I had become comfortable with myself and my lines. Plus, don't be scared to look at other artwork. Im often super inspired by other artists!
What publications or websites do you enjoy reading?
Thrasher magazine, National Geographic, New Scientist and soon to add Debuters!
A big thanks to Cosmic Nuggets for taking the time to do the interview!
